Calling
all Cake Bakers! FESTIVAL - 8 -
11th June
2017
Ced Wells has decided
that this year he would take a well-deserved break
and he is leaving it to the team who helped him
run the event. This year we are serving up tea
,coffee ,cakes and hot food all free; the main
difference is that we will not be in the Festival
site ,we are based St. Paul's Church,
Barton, · Newport, Isle Of Wight PO30
2HZ
Hosted by Christians
from a number of Island churches, Solace provides
an opportunity for completely free chill out. It
provides a chance for people to take a break and
have a free cup of tea and a slice of cake with
other activities on offer such as prayer, feet
washing and live music.
The vision
behind Solace is to show festival goers an
expression of God's unconditional Love and Grace
for us all. This is a gift from the churches on
the Island. Over the 12 years we have been running
it the response has been incredible and we are
seeing God at work more and more each time we do
it.
We are appealing for some
help in all this as we need an army of
intercessors and cake bakers behind
us!
1. PRAY
- Please pray for Solace. For the team to serve
well and for the people who come to discover the
reality of Jesus' love and healing power. 2.
BAKE some Cakes! - We need as
many cakes as possible.

Quarr Abbey, Nr
Fishbourne, Ryde, Isle of Wight PO33 4ES Thursday 6 to
Tuesday 11 July 2017 10am to
5pm FREE ENTRY to Exhibition, Abbey and
grounds
Isle of Wight Ceramic Artist,
Andrew Dowden, will be showing a collection of unique and
distinctive handmade, hand-carved ceramics and
complementary textured wall art at the Quarr Abbey
Art Gallery.
Quarr Abbey is sited in
tranquil grounds with landscaped gardens, the tea
shop and farm shop being particularly popular with
visitors. The Gallery holds weekly exhibitions,
and is one of the main venues for exhibiting local
art on the Island, having built up a regular
following since opening in 2011. This is an
opportunity to view Andrew Dowden's work and buy
directly from the artist. A percentage of all
exhibition sales goes to the Abbey.
Ideas
and designs for Andrew's ceramic work come from
various sources including nature, machinery and
engineering, architecture, and archaeology. Andrew
was inspired to take up ceramics whilst
researching a book on Isle of Wight pottery.
'Pottery has been made on the Island since
Neolithic times,' says Andrew. 'Learning about
pottery and its history, and actually working
through the different stages of each making
process, has made me appreciate this ancient art.'
Surface texture and form are Andrew's main
interest, and textured designs have also been
incorporated into his oil-painted wall art. A
carpenter for 20 years, Andrew made the teak
frames from a 1950s sideboard.
Ceramic tile
panels, wall plaques and standing forms such as
Tumbling Squares, Standing Stones and Wheel Forms,
together with new work, will be on show. 'I
primarily make pieces for my own interest and
satisfaction,' he says, 'but it pleases me to know
that people who buy my work appreciate it
too.'
The gallery will be open from
10am-5pm each day. Admission is
free.

Workshop
to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) – Train the
Trainer Target Group: Any
delegates interested in delivering WRAP training
in their workplace Course Aims: Prevent
is part of the governments counter terrorism
strategy, the aim of which is to reduce the risk
to the UK of terrorism by stopping people becoming
terrorists in the first place. The programme
has three main aims:
•
Respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism
and the threat we face from those who promote
it •
Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and
ensure they are given appropriate advice and
support;
and •
Work with sectors and institutions where there are
risks of radicalisation that we need to address
In order to implement this training across the
island we are asking people to attend a one day
train the trainer event which will accredit
delegates to then deliver basic Prevent Awareness
to other staff within their
organisation. Notes: It is important to
remember that Prevent has come direct from the
Home Office, and as such anyone who agrees to
attend the Train-the-Trainer course will then be
responsible for cascading Prevent Awareness to
others in their service areas/organisation, and as
such must have the time available to do so. To
book a place on this course, please use the
Training Catalogue that can be accessed via the
Employee Self Service Portal.
https://www.iwight.com/trainingcourses/courseDetail.aspx?catId=6&subCatId=25&courseId=2048 If
you do not have access to the corporate network
please complete an online application form and
return to learning.development@iow.gov.uk We
also ask that all delegates complete the online
training module, which can be found here Course

Friday 26th January 2018
with Roy Crowne - Venue yet to be
agreed When we met together this January about
350 of us from across the Island gathered to
worship and benefit from an excellent
speaker. Our prayer is that an even
greater number of us will take these opportunities
once a year to come together as one church on the
Island. Put the date in your diary
now!
More about Roy Crowne Roy
became HOPE Together Executive Director in March
2010 and was previously the National Director of
Youth for Christ in Britain for 12 years. Roy has
written and edited a peer-to-peer evangelistic

Thank
You Liz We
want to
say a Massive "Thank You" to Liz Barsdell who for
the last 8 Years has done the compilation and
dispatch of our Newsletter every two weeks. We
have appreciated her skills and dedication as she
has given her time free to support the Wight
Church vision for working together on the Island.
Liz remains on the Island but will now be focusing
on other
things.
This
year is the Centenary Year of the miraculous
apparitions of The Blessed Virgin Mary to the
three young shepherd children near Fátima in
Portugal. True to its Anglo-Catholic
traditions, Saint Alban's Church in Upper Ventnor
began celebrating this Centenary last Saturday,
13th May, the 100th anniversary of the First
Apparition, when we were joined by people of other
parishes and denominations.
The
appearances at Fátima began at the height of the
First World War, when Our Lady asked the children
to pray for peace, for forgiveness, for
holiness. Our Lady came to them every month
for a period of six months. Word soon spread
and more and more people attended these
appearances, until on 13th October 1917 an
estimated crowd of 70 000 were
present.
Despite opposition from the
authorities at the time, Fátima soon became a
place of pilgrimage and a small chapel was built
on the site. In the 1930s a great basilica
was built nearby but the original chapel still
remains as the principle shrine and the Sanctuary
of Fátima. The eldest of the three children,
Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun
and lived until 2005. The process of her
canonisation has begun. Her cousins, brother
and sister Francisco and Jacinta de Jesus Marto
died in the worldwide flu pandemic in
1919/20. They were canonised by Pope Francis
before a crowd of over one million in Fátima last
Saturday.
The service at St. Alban's
included a short film (courtesy of the internet)
of the day’s events in Fatima and concluded with
various snacks, custard tarts and fruits brought
over freshly from Portugal the previous day.
Further services and events to celebrate - and
respond to - the apparitions of Our Lady of The
Rosary of Fátima are planned for the coming
months. We will do our best to keep you
posted of these events, in the hope that you will
join us. Forgiveness, holiness and peace are
as important now as they were then.
•
Do you want to make a difference to a young
person’s
life? • Do
you have 1- 4 hours per month to
spare?
We urgently require more
volunteers, so why not volunteer as a
mentor/befriender for NYAS as an Independent
Visitor for children and young people in
care.
As a volunteer you
will: •
Have fun, take young people on outings and maybe
share a hobby, sport or
interest. •
Offer support and a listening ear and be a
positive influence in a young person’s
life. •
Help build self-esteem and
confidence.
You don’t need any
special qualifications. We are looking for
reliable and dependable people from all walks of
life. We will provide training and on-going
support. We will pay expenses to a set
limit.
Here is what some of our young
people and volunteers have to say about this
rewarding
role: • I
like how my Independent Visitor isn’t anything to
do with social services and is here to support me,
not to
judge. •
They have boosted my confidence. Now I feel
like when I go places I can just relax and have
fun. • My
Young person always looks forward to me
coming. They have had such a disjointed life
and I am a stable figure in their life. This has
to be important for them as everything else
changes around them a lot.
If you
would like to apply, please visit our website

Here at The
Living room we support Toilet twinning.
Did you know that over 40% of the
worlds population do not have toilet facilities,
if you would like to help this amazing charity
change this fact then come along to The living
room where we can explain ways you can get
involved.
Suspended
drinks Here at The living room you
can help support others in your community by
paying for a coffee for someone who can't afford
to buy one, it's called a suspended drink, it
costs just £1.50, please come in and ask us more
about our suspended drinks scheme.
We are run
by a team of fantastic volunteers,
including 9 teenagers that come and help serve the
community, some of which go to church and some
have never been, without whom none of what we do
would be possible! We are looking to add to our
team. If you have a morning or afternoon
free a week? Then please come and speak to us in
The Living room.
Revive
Newport are trying to raise money so that they can
put on Park Life, a free family fun festival that
we put on for over 3,000 people from our community
nearly every year... This is a big part of what
we do as churches together in Newport, but in
order to make it happen this year we need
financial support, so if you would like to make a
contribution, please click on the
link. Park Life
