Quarr Abbey, Nr
Fishbourne, Ryde, Isle of Wight PO33 4ES Thursday 6 to
Tuesday 11 July 2017 10am to
5pm FREE ENTRY to Exhibition, Abbey and
grounds
Isle of Wight Ceramic Artist,
Andrew Dowden, will be showing a collection of unique and
distinctive handmade, hand-carved ceramics and
complementary textured wall art at the Quarr Abbey
Art Gallery.
Quarr Abbey is sited in
tranquil grounds with landscaped gardens, the tea
shop and farm shop being particularly popular with
visitors. The Gallery holds weekly exhibitions,
and is one of the main venues for exhibiting local
art on the Island, having built up a regular
following since opening in 2011. This is an
opportunity to view Andrew Dowden's work and buy
directly from the artist. A percentage of all
exhibition sales goes to the Abbey.
Ideas
and designs for Andrew's ceramic work come from
various sources including nature, machinery and
engineering, architecture, and archaeology. Andrew
was inspired to take up ceramics whilst
researching a book on Isle of Wight pottery.
'Pottery has been made on the Island since
Neolithic times,' says Andrew. 'Learning about
pottery and its history, and actually working
through the different stages of each making
process, has made me appreciate this ancient art.'
Surface texture and form are Andrew's main
interest, and textured designs have also been
incorporated into his oil-painted wall art. A
carpenter for 20 years, Andrew made the teak
frames from a 1950s sideboard.
Ceramic tile
panels, wall plaques and standing forms such as
Tumbling Squares, Standing Stones and Wheel Forms,
together with new work, will be on show. 'I
primarily make pieces for my own interest and
satisfaction,' he says, 'but it pleases me to know
that people who buy my work appreciate it
too.'
The gallery will be open from
10am-5pm each day. Admission is
free.

FREE
training course about terrorism / hate crime
particularly against faith
groups
Workshop
to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) – Train the
Trainer Target Group: Any
delegates interested in delivering WRAP training
in their workplace Course Aims: Prevent
is part of the governments counter terrorism
strategy, the aim of which is to reduce the risk
to the UK of terrorism by stopping people becoming
terrorists in the first place. The programme
has three main aims:
•
Respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism
and the threat we face from those who promote
it •
Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and
ensure they are given appropriate advice and
support;
and •
Work with sectors and institutions where there are
risks of radicalisation that we need to address
In order to implement this training across the
island we are asking people to attend a one day
train the trainer event which will accredit
delegates to then deliver basic Prevent Awareness
to other staff within their
organisation. Notes: It is important to
remember that Prevent has come direct from the
Home Office, and as such anyone who agrees to
attend the Train-the-Trainer course will then be
responsible for cascading Prevent Awareness to
others in their service areas/organisation, and as
such must have the time available to do so. To
book a place on this course, please use the
Training Catalogue that can be accessed via the
Employee Self Service Portal.
https://www.iwight.com/trainingcourses/courseDetail.aspx?catId=6&subCatId=25&courseId=2048 If
you do not have access to the corporate network
please complete an online application form and
return to learning.development@iow.gov.uk We
also ask that all delegates complete the online
training module, which can be found here Course

protective security measures to places of worship
that have been subject to, or are vulnerable to a
hate crime attack. Funding will not be
available for improvements, security upgrades,
crimes such as anti-social behaviour, burglary and
theft of lead from church roofs. You
can bid for funding from 3 April

Friday 26th January 2018
with Roy Crowne - Venue yet to be
agreed When we met together this January about
350 of us from across the Island gathered to
worship and benefit from an excellent
speaker. Our prayer is that an even
greater number of us will take these opportunities
once a year to come together as one church on the
Island. Put the date in your diary
now!
More about Roy Crowne Roy
became HOPE Together Executive Director in March
2010 and was previously the National Director of
Youth for Christ in Britain for 12 years. Roy has
written and edited a peer-to-peer evangelistic
training course, called 'The Art of
Connecting'. He was one of the founders of
HOPE 08. HOPE 08 closed its office in 2009, but
since then many churches, denominations and
agencies have endorsed its re-commencement. He is
very excited about Hope going forwards, which will
bring Word and Deed missions to many villages,
towns and cities. He is the most positive and
enthusiastic HOPE visionary you could ever meet.
He will continue his preaching, teaching and
mentoring younger leaders. Roy is married to
Flossie, lives in Rugby and they have two sons,
John and Michael.

Volunteer for
NYAS
•
Do you want to make a difference to a young
person’s
life? • Do
you have 1- 4 hours per month to
spare?
We urgently require more
volunteers, so why not volunteer as a
mentor/befriender for NYAS as an Independent
Visitor for children and young people in
care.
As a volunteer you
will: •
Have fun, take young people on outings and maybe
share a hobby, sport or
interest. •
Offer support and a listening ear and be a
positive influence in a young person’s
life. •
Help build self-esteem and
confidence.
You don’t need any
special qualifications. We are looking for
reliable and dependable people from all walks of
life. We will provide training and on-going
support. We will pay expenses to a set
limit.
Here is what some of our young
people and volunteers have to say about this
rewarding
role: • I
like how my Independent Visitor isn’t anything to
do with social services and is here to support me,
not to
judge. •
They have boosted my confidence. Now I feel
like when I go places I can just relax and have
fun. • My
Young person always looks forward to me
coming. They have had such a disjointed life
and I am a stable figure in their life. This has
to be important for them as everything else
changes around them a lot.
If you
would like to apply, please visit our website
www.nyas.net

VIII, King Charles 1 was assisted to escape from
imprisonment from Carisbrooke Castle by the
